Sep 2: Day 1 – Welcome to Lisbon

Filled with old pastel-painted houses and bustling squares, Portugal's hilly capital is as beautiful as it is historic. The vibrant city of Lisbon boasts a prime coastal location, which creates a blissful blend of beach and bustle.

Arrive at the airport, pick up your rental car, and make your way to picturesque Lisbon! Start your Portugese adventure by navigating through the maze-like streets of Alfama, Lisbon's oldest district.

TIP: Take a ride on the iconic Tram 28, where you'll pass through the city's historic neighborhoods, streets, and hills while aboard a train dating back to the 1930s!

Sep 3: Day 2 – Lisbon (B)

Spend an entire day discovering the sights and secrets of Lisbon on your own today! Here are some ideas for you:

  • Head to the historic district of Belem, where ancient monuments and extravagant castles await. Discover the cloisters and stone carvings of Jeronimos Monastery, then wind down at the picturesque gardens. Be sure to stop by Antiga Confeitaria de Belem, the rumored birthplace of the Portuguese egg tart!
  • Take a walk along the waterfront to Belem Tower, a symbol of the city which boasts a blend of architectural influences from Moorish to Venetian.

Sep 4: Day 3 – Lisbon (B)

Continue exploring Lisbon today on your own. One idea for you is to hop in your car and take a day trip to Sintra, which is about a 30-minute drive away. Discover the fairytale-like Pena Palace, enjoy sweeping views of the city at the Castle of the Moors, then discover the city's Moorish history at the Palace of Sintra.

Sep 5: Day 4 – Lisbon to Coimbra (B)

After breakfast (included at your hotel), begin your journey north to Coimbra, a former home of the King of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques. Enjoy the rest of the day on your own, exploring this ancient city.

Use your rental car to drive from Lisbon to Coimbra. It is about 130 miles and around a 2 hour drive.

Welcome to Coimbra! A stay in Coimbra feels like a stay in medieval times. This gorgeous riverfront city is home to a preserved old town featuring the historic University of Coimbra, the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, the Monastery of Santa Cruz, as well as ancient Roman ruins.

Sep 6: Day 5 – Coimbra (B)

Coimbra may be the country's former capital, but it is still the current capital of knowledge! Explore on your own the grounds of the University of Coimbra, Portugal's oldest college, dating back to 1290.

TIP: Continue onto the religious highlights of the the city. Explore the chilling 10th century Romanesque Sao Salvador, or visit the burial chambers of Portugal's first two kings at the Monastery of Santa Cruz. Also, discover the secrets of the 12th century Sao Tiago, which hides in plain sight on one of the city's many narrow roads.

Sep 7: Day 6 – Coimbra to Porto (B)

Use your rental car to drive from Coimbra to Porto. It is about 80 miles and around a 1.5 hour drive.

Welcome to Porto! Start your adventure off in one of Porto's most famous and oldest districts: Ribiera. Make your way through the narrow streets, stopping at the many shops and cafes along the way! Along the banks you'll pass by dozens of old Rabelo boats, loaded with Port Wine cellars - treat yourself to a ride on one, sipping wine while coasting along the river Douro!

Sep 8: Day 7 – Porto (B)

Start your day off on your own with a stroll through the picturesque Crystal Palace Gardens. Located at the highest part of the city, this royal garden provides visitors with sweeping views of Porto from above. After, you may want to pay a visit to the modern artworks housed at the Serralves Museum, or admire the architecture of (or catch an opera) at the Casa di Musica. Finally, spend your last evening in Porto in the vibrant downtown area, sipping on locally-produces wines, dancing the night away at one of the many clubs, or enjoying some live music alongside a crowd of locals.

Sep 9: Day 8 – Depart to USA (B)
